What might be the reason for the dispensations? Just because dispensationalism seems to describe the scriptures, using a literal interpretation method as the scriptures appear to use, does not automatically make it correct. Why would God work in these various ways at various times? What is His overarching purpose?
With no support at this time, one of the main aspects of the purpose of God in creation and history is His Own honour and glory.
How does Dispensational teaching align with that? Consider the dispensations in classic dispensationalism.
1. Innocence – man in idyllic conditions with no sin nature failed when met with the enemy.
2. Conscience – man relying on conscience to direct his actions failed, leading to the flood.
3. Human Government – man relying on the rule of fallible humanity to rule failed, including at Babel.
4. Promise – man given promises from God Himself failed, both in the life of Abraham and in the succeeding generations.
5. Law – man given a law literally from the hand of God was unable to keep it, and failed.
6. Grace – man given the Holy Spirit to indwell believers have failed.
7. Millennial – man in idyllic conditions with God the Son physically ruling over the world with no enemy will fail.
What does this have to do with the glory of God? Each and every person who will be with God forever will be there solely through the activities of God. Humanity is powerless to live properly and earn favour with God, and therefore all praise will be given to Him. The dispensations make explicitly clear that mankind is incapable, under their own power, to live godly lives, regardless of the circumstances they find themselves in.
God created the universe and mankind in such a way that all things would be wholly dependent on Himself. Mankind today tries to live apart from God, with disastrous consequences. And many try, under their own power, with man-made ideas to bring themselves to God, with equally disastrous consequences.
